A few weeks ago, Thom and I drove down to Fredericksburg for the day. It was actually on my birthday, which happened to be a Friday. I wasn't expecting anything, for it was a workday and I knew we were going to celebrate that Sunday--- so I thought I'd just go home and work. Thom was running late for work and rushing around, trying to hurry me up and everything, and when we were both about to leave, he said, "Okay, so what do you want to do today? Let's go somewhere." He'd totally tricked me! I'd no idea. It was a good surprise.
Anyway, we ended up down in Fredericksburg that afternoon, via little back-roads we guessed would get us there. We walked around, looked at antiques, and eventually ended up at Sammy T's--- a really cool little restaurant we'd been to once before. The building was an auction house built in 1804, then home to a Confederate brigadier general, then served as the post office in the 1870s, and eventually was a few other things over the years. Very cool. They do serve meat, but are very vegan friendly and they even have their menu labeled for both vegetarian and vegan options separately. We appreciate that!
Both times we've been there, we've sat in their outside tables. The first time we were there we'd brought Guido (who just happens to be a pretty large dog) and they put out a bowl of water for him. Sammy T's is right on Caroline St. so it's right in the middle of all of the action. When we had Guido with us approx. 78 people stopped to exclaim how our dog looks like a bear. The weather was nice, though. And most importantly, the food is GOOD. The first time we went there, about a year ago, we didn't have much money, so we shared something DELICIOUS. It was a Spinach Fold-Over, which had hummus, sauteéd spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms and red onion folded in a grilled flour tortilla and was served with a side of lemon tahini. SO GOOD. Mmm.
This most recent time we got separate dishes and shared, AND I remembered to take pictures! I mean...Thom remembered.
They aren't very good pictures, but here you go. Thom got the Tempeh Burger, which was grilled with tamari and topped with sautéed mushrooms and onions, served on a multi-grain roll. Messy, and good.

I chose the Vegan Veg wrap, which had hummus, sauteed mushrooms, onions, green peppers, tomato, walnuts & garlic wrapped in a flour tortilla. It was definitely one of the best wraps I've ever had. Roasted veggies coated in hummus? What could be better? And the walnuts. I'd never even heard of that before! Nice and crunchy. Very good. Oh, and we also got some sweet potato fries that were amazing. We only ordered a half-basket and it was huge! I can only imagine the full size. Mmm...maybe one hungry, hungry day I will find out.

So, that's it for now. If you're ever in the area, check out Sammy T's.
And yeah, I know I said I'd be updating more, but we have been so, so busy. The lease was up on the cabin yesterday and we've been steady moving and cleaning for a while. Also, it's finals. This is my fifth year of doing this and it sure isn't getting any easier! Rest assured, though, we are still cooking and eating good food. I will just have to blog about it later.
Cheers!
Hey, you've got a cool blog. More people should know about it. You put a lot of effort into your food - it all looks great!
ReplyDeleteDitto Blessed Mama's comment. I need to study all the posts here, thanks for letting me know it existed.
ReplyDeleteHey, thanks guys! I haven't been doing much advertising yet---you are actually my first comments, haha.
ReplyDeleteFirst comments in two years? Giiirrrl! Okay, I'm making you a link on mine as well. We'll change that! :)
ReplyDeleteMarja: Love your blog. I hear you cook some beautiful food! Love the pics too. Lee Ann
ReplyDeleteI've actually only been writing this blog for a month or two! I had a different not-food blog a few years ago, but it was private, so I'm guessing no one can see it.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your appreciation!
Also, thanks, Lee Ann! Maybe one day I'll get to make you dinner?
